What
Anyone, literally, can remember her first party dress, the feel of the luxurious fabric (oh the stiff, magic taffeta, the tulle, the rich, sheer velvet…) and the sense of power it gave. The party dress is old as history, common to every civilization: prior to the XVIII century, the style of a formal dress, i.e. the party dress of today, was far less important than the fabric it was made of: the formal dress was an immediate indicator, an obvious symbol of the wearer’s wealth. In a certain way, this is true still nowadays. The party dress is something one can treasure, and never goes out of style: brand new or vintage, it always has a buzz around it. Think the £410,000 bid on the little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in a 2006 vintage auction at Christie’s, or the spectacular Versace black gown that made Liz Hurley’s career skyrocket. The party dress can really easily turn a life around… apart from the fun, of course.

When and how
There’s ALWAYS the right occasion to wear a party dress: a mini or short dress is appropriate for a cocktail or black-tie venue, while a gown asks for a grand ball or an important reception requesting white-tie on the invitation. Then, there’s the masquerade or the theme ball (get the disco queen look with a vintage dress, ladies), and the romantic party just for the two of you (a black satin fourreau and you’re never wrong). Still, never overdress or, worse, over-accessorize. Remember always to put down one of the jewels you’re wearing before getting through the door. As usual, less is more.

The party dress yes and no
Bold colors over delicate textures, intricate patterns and precious sequins are usually most welcomed, even expected. Simply, don’t overdo: avoid matching colors and fabric (a blue satin court pump worn under a blue dress calls for dowager duchess or the Queen of England: it’s definitely better to wear a silver strappy sandal). Also pay attention to the fabric–the ideal choice is one of those beautiful fabrics that just caress the body, like faille or chiffon; see Lanvin’s pieces designed by Alber Elbaz. One-sleeve dresses, on the other hand, are perfect to enhance delicate features and small bosoms. With regards to colors: never take black as the only possible option. Black is easy, but red, blue, sequins are more fun and look at their best even on 4+ sizes: look at Queen Latifah as an example—doesn’t she look gorgeous and sexy in shiny colors?
