The Ting Tings

Their debut album “We Started Nothing” went straight to #1 in the album chart upon release in May 2008 and has since reached platinum status in the UK having sold 1 million albums worldwide. YOOX.COM meets THE TING TINGS.

1. Three adjectives to describe your music…
Homemade, instinctive and danceable.

‬2. You released your single “Great DJ” as a free download. Why did you decide to do that?
We decided to do that as we had so many people asking for something to play, not just on MySpace but at parties etc. We still had a while to go before releasing our first single so we wanted people to have “Great DJ” to tide them over.

3. In your opinion, how does the Internet affect the music business? ‬
It has been important and inspiring to us. When we started as a band we gained so much confidence from our songs travelling so quickly around the world. We were basically making songs in our living room, and to have people in the States or Japan finding us through the Internet and asking us for more, kind of put our faith back in music. For the business it’s not that great, but they are just going to have to figure that out.

4. What are your plans for 2009?
We are touring right up until the end of spring. Starting in January, we are off to Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and back to the States as our song “That’s Not My Name” is not even out there until February or March. After that we collapse in a big heap and think about writing the second album.

5. How would you define your fashion style?
I like being feminine but a little bit punky as well. I make a lot of my own clothes and love ‘60s-styledresses and ‘80s colors. My dear friend Bill says I look like someone from the ‘90s trying for the ‘60s look. That makes me laugh…

6. What present would you like for the Holidays? And what would you love to buy for a special friend?
You know, the one thing I really need is some decent underwear. It’s the last thing I think about on stage as nobody can see it. But I’m going to get some lovely girly frilly things for Christmas.
For a special friend… There is this jeep/space buggy thing advertised on TV in America at the moment. It looks like an evil golf cart and goes up to 40 miles per hour. Every time it comes on TV Jules and the male crew turn into zombies and make yearning sounds at the screen. If I was to buy it for someone, I could have a go!
