What
What is it about the 1920s that continues to resonate with so many designers? Now more than ever, many of the Spring-Summer collections—whether Diane von Furstenberg in New York, or Alberta Ferretti and Raf Simons for Jil Sander in Milan—were clearly inspired by the Parisian avant-garde and its muses: think Lee Miller, Kiki de Montparnasse, and Picasso’s beautiful wife Olga Khokhlova. Get the sheer luxury of silk and jersey, get the energetic colors, get the graphics, the flapper fringe, get the kick-up-your-heels spirit. Shapes range from Charleston-worthy sleeveless dresses to one-shouldered tops, balloon-sleeved blouses and shimmering jackets that evoke every futuristic TV series from the last forty years. Trousers can be classically slim, jackets fitted by means of a belt, while colors are emphasized when worn over neutral shades: think Blumarine, Vuitton or Balenciaga.
Get and wear them now. Put a cardigan and a coat on top and fight back. Times are getting hard, the temperature is rising, one needs to be cheered up.
Spring preview yes and no
New hints for spring are bold colors in contrast with delicate floral mix or matte and shine basics. Since the moment to mix everything up has passed (there was a time when stripes and floral prints went happily together, if offered the right color matching), keep it classical and stylish even if you are really fashion conscious. Play (and surprise) with shapes instead. Always keep balloon sleeves in mind.
Style tricks
Accessorize wisely. If wearing light fabrics now, put on your flat boots, a pair of interesting socks or tights (meaning: don’t go for black) and choose a bag with character.
