There is something charmingly unusual about Florence Welch. While she is regularly showered with designer goodies and expensive garments, there are few things she likes more than her battered-up old brogues, which also seem to fit perfectly in her closet full of vintage pieces. Amongst current designers her heart belongs to Temperley London, as well as edgier brands of the likes of Acne .
Something about Florence goes beyond what meets the eye, something whimsical that borders on the spiritual. Of her music Florence says “it’s something overwhelming and all-encompassing that fills you up, and you’re either going to explode with it, or you’re just going to disappear.” We can’t wait to hear what she has in store for her second album; but in the meantime we shall carry on listening to Lungs on repeat.

ABOUT FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE

Florence and the Machine formed in 2007 in London. The band is the recording name of lead singer and songwriter Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her, with Florence the only constant member. Florence grew up in Camberwell, south London, the oldest of three children. She started singing along to Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield at home, expanded her vocal range with arias, before attending Camberwell Art College where she started developing her unique persona  before being discovered singing Motown covers in a nightclub toilet. Musically Florence and the Machine’s sound is generally referred to as soul-inspired indie rock. Her debut album Lungs, released in the summer of 2009, is an all-encompassing mix of harps, choirs, drums, string quartets and Gothic imagery. However, Florence says it’s usually simple. “Everything is about boys! The whole album is about love – and pain. People see my lyrics as crazy, but to me it’s an honest, heartfelt album. I didn’t set out to be wacky. I just want it to be emotive.” Amongst her most popular songs are her own creations, including “Kiss With A Fist”, “Dogs Days Are Over” and “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)”, as well as covers such as Candi Staton’s “You’ve Got The Love”.
