CocoRosie

mainnews

Their music evokes visionary landscapes surrounded by gentle mythological creatures. Their songs feature an orchestra of sounds that range from electronic, to folk, to Hip Hop. Prada chose them to create the soundtrack for “Trembled Blossom”, the animated short film that was used to present the Spring-Summer 2008 Collection. Bianca and Sierra Casady, stage name “CocoRosie”, are the extravagant, captivating ladies from today’s neo-folk scene. The New Yooxer met up with Bianca Casady for an exclusive interview that leads us through the American duo’s dreamlike world.

These two anti-conformist, multi-faceted sisters are currently busy with various artistic, musical and fashion projects. Their lives make up a fantastic story full of travel and unexpected encounters in unfamiliar, strange places. After having lived apart for many years, the two young women reunite in Paris and, losing themselves in silence, darkness and innocent sounds, they record their debut album – a project with raw notes and pioneering spirit.
The sound of rain introduces the notes of a flute. This is how the artistic adventure of CocoRosie begins.

Exclusive interview with Bianca Casady

“The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn” was produced in Iceland, the land of fire and ice. What’s your relationship with nature?
One of my favorite things is to take long walks in the forest…Maybe even dressed up in jewelry and diamonds. My principal muses are animals and fire.

Your new album is going to be released soon. How would you describe this project?
Like our previous albums, I can’t really describe a specific genre, but as a syncretism of suggestions. Dark sounds will dance about with spiritual, ancient atmospheres.

You are an eclectic artist, singer, poet, writer…where does the inspiration for your work come from?
Everything my eyes observe becomes a source of inspiration, a starting point could come from anywhere. I could start to create thinking about snow or blood, crystals or candles, dreams, silk, felt, gnomes, vampires…

You’ve played with artists like Bright Eyes, Devendra Banhart, TV on the Radio, and others. How was it working with Antony (and the Johnsons)?
I was captured by a mystical sensation when I found myself working with him. I enjoy it and find it to be very spiritual; he’s beautiful and it will always be a pleasure performing and experimenting with new sounds with Antony.

How do you feel about fashion?
Fashion is a communication tool, a business card that speaks about the personality of an individual. It’s the first way I express myself, which is why I hardly buy anything and wear mainly things of my own creation.

If you weren’t an artist what would you be?
Gardener, masseuse or curator.
