Steve McCurry, one of the most renowned photographers of our times, reveals himself in an exclusive video interview.
A two-time winner of the World Press Photo Awards, Steve McCurry is one of today’s true masters of photojournalism. Whether taking photos in India, Tibet, Afghanistan, Burma, or the United States, they are all infused with the same magic, the same meticulous attention to color and light.
His 1984 portrait of the green-eyed “Afghan Girl”, Sharbat Gula, in a Pakistani refugee camp became an immediate symbol in the world’s collective imagination, and an indisputable icon of contemporary photojournalism. It was featured on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic, and many consider it “the most recognized photo in the world”.
Milan is currently hosting a unique exhibit, “Sud-Est”, the photographer’s first Italian retrospective: over 200 photographs that reveal the faces, colors and landscapes of Afghanistan, India, Tibet and Burma. The exhibit represents the visual experience of McCurry’s numerous trips to the world’s Eastern and Southern nations; the viewers are invited to experience and witness the struggles and beauty of these faraway places, so masterfully captured through McCurry’s lens.
