Rock Style

main-news2

The exhibition “Who Shot Rock ‘n Roll” at the Brooklyn Museum reveals the private side of stars like Mick Jagger, Courtney Love, Radiohead and Amy Winehouse. SOS Sense of Style examines the eternal allure of rock music’s provocative style, and why it continues to be more relevant than ever.

In the collective imagination, being a rock star is not just about what happens on stage, but about a whole look, attitude and lifestyle. Many icons are known and loved as much for their style as they are for their music; clothing becomes a significant form of self-expression that inspires trends for generations to come. The exhibition “Who Shot Rock ‘n Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present” is dedicated to rock music’s biggest names and the photographers who immortalized them, capturing on film the private moments of legends like Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Johnny Cash, Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, and many more.

The exhibition features studio portraits, snapshots and pictures from live concerts – each photo captures the energy, personality, and passion of the artist on the other side of the lens (it’s hard not to smile at the Shawn Mortensen’s Polaroid of Courtney Love, with her signed autograph, “Fuck you”). Individual style and attitude are on evident display, and it’s easy to see how artists, trends, and style-revolutions have influenced each other over the years. Patent leather, platform shoes and metal studs for her; provocatively-printed T-shirts, ripped jeans, sneakers and leather bracelets for him. Key looks for the Rock ‘n Roll lifestyle of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
