main_news_margella

Since being established in 1989, Maison Martin Margiela has presented its prêt-à-porter collections of dresses, accessories, and artwork with the label “Artisanal”, or “handmade”. Like in a virtual museum, a selection of Menswear and Womenswear from the Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection is now available online, exclusively on yoox.com.

“Our most important sources of inspiration have always been excesses and the transformations of everyday life”, is the philosophy behind the Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection. In the spirit of sophisticated eco-compatibility, used material of all types and purposes gets brought back to life with meticulous craftsmanship, transforming into new objects that are surprising and extraordinary, while maintaining the traces of time and history – one of the Maison’s signature forms of creative expression.

A part of the proceeds from the sale will be given to the Rosa Spier House, a residence created especially for retired musicians, artists, and academics. Established in Laren, Holland in 1969 and considered a “paradise for artists”, it was founded according to an idea of the harpist Rosa Spier and funded by her friend and art-lover Henriette Polak. Believing that creativity doesn’t stop with the passage of time, Rosa Spier wanted to create a place where artists could feel free to cultivate their own passions. Renowned artists like M.C. Escher, famous for his wood engravings and lithographs, have enjoyed this oasis, surrounded by gardens and furnished with studios and music rooms. A unique place, where creative spirits are encouraged to continue their work.

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA

Martin Margiela was born in Belgium and graduated from the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The Maison Martin Margiela was founded in 1988 in Paris, and presented its first prêt-à-porter collection for spring/summer 1989. This collection featured a completely white rectangular label attached by four stitches apparent on the exterior of unlined garments.
Line 10, the first men’s collection of the house, was created ten years later (1999).
In 1994 the Maison launched its first fundraising AIDS T-shirt, which now rotates seasonally. Part of the profits are donated to benefit an AIDS research foundation.
Additional Maison lines include the women’s and men’s collections 4 and 14; accessories collection 11; 22, a collection of shoes for women and men; MM6, a less design-driven collection for women; Eyewear for men and women, 8; and fine jewellery, 12. Today there are more than thirty Maison Martin Margiela shops around the world.
The use of white as a universal colour in varying shades, tones, and textures has become the symbolic signature of Maison Martin Margiela.
