A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Butler graduated from the School of Law at Glasgow University before the lure of artistic pursuits brought him to London. While working in a coffee shop, he was approached by the actor Steven Berkoff who offered him a role in the play Coriolanus, which gave Butler the confidence to commit to acting full time. Other early theatrical parts include the junkie Renton in the play Trainspotting, the same character that was played by Ewan McGregor on the big screen. Butler’s first leading film role came with the part of Dracula in Dracula’s Legacy, which earned him the lead in the television mini-series Attila and caught the attention of critics and public alike. His career took off soon after with big-budget movie like Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life; Timeline, based on the Michael Crichton novel; and Joel Schumacker’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera. His international fame was achieved with the 2006 blockbuster 300 and the romantic drama P.S. I Love You, which was released in 2008.
