From Florentine aristocrat to iconic designer. The story behind Emilio Pucci’s success has its origins in pure chance: in 1948 he was photographed on the ski slopes of Zermatt, together with a female friend who happened to be wearing a ski suit of his own design.
The photos landed in the hands of none other than Diana Vreeland, who was Harper’s Bazaar fashion editor at the time. Vreeland not only published the photos, but wrote an enthusiastic article praising the talents of the Marquis Pucci. From the pages of Harper’s Bazaar to international acclaim, which lead to a debut collection of women’s sportswear for the opening of the first boutique on the island of Capri. Soon afterwards, the Maison Pucci was founded. It was Capri that inspired the Marquis Pucci’s use of color and print, features which remain the “signature” of the brand even today. Pucci himself created the motifs for his pieces, turning to nature for his own color palette, taking numerous photographs and archiving each tonality in meticulous archives.
EMILIO PUCCI MEMORABILIA
His vivid clothes are an ode to the carefree and stylish dolce vita spirit, which caused a true “Pucci Mania”: every self-respecting member of the international jet-set coveted a dress from the “Prince of Prints” for a film premiere, a bright bikini to flaunt on a yacht, or a ski-suit for the slopes. As Emilio’s daughter and successor, Laudomia Pucci, tells the New Yooxer, “The Vintage Pucci phenomenon began during my first years at my father’s company. It was 1989 when suddenly a wave of fashionistas began showing up at fashion shows in Paris, New York, and Milan wearing Pucci scarves, dresses, or leggings with our recognizable prints. Soon afterwards, women like Paloma Picasso, Isabella Rossellini, and Madonna picked up on the trend. That’s when vintage Pucci became an absolute must-have. Personally, I can‘t resist temptation…so I buy it!”
