Futurism Attitude
This month’s YOOXCOVER is inspired by the constructed geometries and the enveloping shapes of Futurist sculptures. The vivid colors and the sharp lines of the featured dress take style in a new direction, a crossroads between art and couture, inspired by the artistic movement which continues to best embody the “avant-garde” mindset.
Thanks to Futurism and their founders, we now take for granted the ability to break the rules once established by classical art and academia. Today’s fashion carries the echoes of these ideas, conceived a century ago, and continues to reverberate with bright color palettes, sculptural shapes, and the provocative courage to push boundaries. In the early 1900s, the Futurist artists were already experimenting in all kinds of creative fields—and fashion was a significant and prolific source of inspiration. During the 1930s, the Italian Futurist painter Thayaht transformed himself into a designer, working for the famous fashion house Madeleine Vionnet and launching the first prototype of overalls, which has become a best-selling item in current collections by designers like Antonio Marras. Many of today’s designers admit to taking their inspiration from art: in 2007, Laura Biagiotti created a collection named LaurArt, as a tribute to her personal collection of Futurist paintings. Modern fashion’s brightest stars like Nicolas Guesquière for Balenciaga, the young talent Gareth Pugh, or Consuelo Castiglioni for Marni, regularly employ the dynamism of the futurist art into their creations, and have become famous for their structured outfits and vibrant colors.

The New Yooxer pays homage to Futurism’s 100th anniversary celebration with an editorial photoshoot dedicated to the concept of a new ‘wearable art’.
