Italy’s Wonders: TriesteTrieste has a petulant grace,” wrote Italian poet Umberto Saba in a piece dedicated to his city. This grace constantly hangs in the balance between past and future, tradition and innovation.

There’s a certain timeless fascination to be rediscovered during a weekend when the weather is warm and the sea seems to sparkle. What to pack? Simple pieces with a nautical inspiration, naturally.

Take your style cues from the stately uniforms of sailors, who have always been the real main characters of the city: blue-and-white clothing with embellishments inspired by military insignia. For men, work the allure of authority with a double-breasted jacket with shiny, gilded buttons like this one by Marc Jacobs, to be worn with a t-shirt – perhaps with stripes – and light colored pants. For women, think high-waisted sailor pants like these by Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, to be paired with a trapeze blouse by day or for a sexier a one-shoulder silk top by night like this one by Stella McCartney. And everyone needs a hat – either a newsboy cap or a panama will do (James Joyce, who lived in Trieste for a number of years, never left home without one).

Take a walk on the Molo Audace to lose yourself in the view, enjoy a cocktail in the historical bars of Piazza Unità d’Italia and visit the Miramare Castle on the sea, which will transport you to the lavish epoch of the Hapsburgs when the Empress Sissi called this charming place her home.
